Our History

OUR BEGINNING

The Akkawy brothers, Johan, Peter and Mick took up amateur boxing at the St George PCYC in the early 1980?s and between them won a number titles and represented the state of New South Wales on many occasions through the mid to late 1980?s. Mick Akkaway represented Australia at boxing events around the world including the Amateur World Champion Cup in Moscow in 1990.

In later years towards the end of his amateur career and at the start of his professional boxing career Mick was trained by Johnny Lewis joining the Jeff Fenech and Jeff Harding stable at the time. Johnny Lewis has referred to Mick as being the hardest puncher he has ever seen. In his book ‘Johnny Lewis – The Biography – The Story of Australia’s King of Boxing’ (2010), Paul Kent writes:

“Johnny saw another potential world champion in Michael Akkawy. Still the hardest puncher he has ever seen. A welterweight, Akkawy’s punches lifted his opponents feet off the canvas. Most cruiserweights would have swapped with him right there… He thought that until a car accident ended his career, after just one professional fight”.

Though the accident took him from the ring, Mick channeled his drive and energy into starting the Akkawy Boxing Club which has trained some of Australia’s top professional fighters such as Sakio Bika, Nader Hamdan, Zac Awad, Junior Talipeau, Sonny Bill Williams, Sam Ah See, Bilal Akkawy, and Mario Karacsony.
